Self-taught and working in isolation until just before his death in 1973, Henry Darger realized an elaborate fantasy world of remarkable beauty and strangeness, first in a vast writetn narrative, In the Realms of the Unreal, and then, over a period of decades, in hundreds of works on paper, many of them panoramas extending ten feet or more. Nearly two hundred of these works are reproduced, often as double-page spreads, in this volume, which includes eight three-page gatefolds. Angel-like Blengins with butterfly wings, natural catastrophes and hair-raising human cruelty, innocent girls and murderous soldiers all appear in Darger's scenes, which center on the heroic adventures of the seven Vivian sisters.
Edited and with an introduction by Klaus Biesenbach. Contributions by Brooke Davis Anderson, Michael Bonesteel, and Carl Watson, with Henry Darger's The History of My Life.
