Gordon Swenarton takes walks in the woods near his house in New Jersey to look for pieces of wood to make his creations. Originally an advertising artist , when Gordon saw a picture of a fish decoy one day in a fishing journal, he began making them as a hobby. He carves each piece on the deck of his house, enjoying the freedom to make creatures look whimsical and colorful. Signed by the artist, Gordon also creates authentic looking tramp art mirrors, wonderful 'snake' walking sticks and more.
In this piece, Gordon Swenarton created a Tramp Art Box featuring a miniature camouflaged orange and green army tank. The tank on the lid is there to commemorate the Battle of the Somme also known as the Somme Offensive. It was a battle of the First World War fought by the armies of the British Empire and French Third Republic against the German Empire. The battle was intended to hasten a victory for the Allies. More than three million men fought in the battle and one million men were wounded or killed, making it one of the deadliest battles in human history. This tramp Art Box is a one of a kind work of art.
