• Mary L. Proctor Painted Panel "A women got to lover herself..."

  • After losing 4 relatives to a house fire in February 1995, a small but angelic voice came to her and asked her to paint a door. Once that door was completed, she sold it to a art collector. Fascinated by her work, more doors were commissioned, and thus began her career as a folk artist. Since that time, Mary has painted compulsively. Upon the surfaces she paints, she also glues buttons, sticks, pebbles or broken pieces of glass, mirror or plates. To her, reassembling the broken pieces represents the process of mending. She sees herself as a missionary and the people who purchase her work as the deliverers.

In this piece "Missionary" Marry L. Proctor painted a women empowering herself by saying "A Women got to lover herself, If she doesn't, Who will?". On the back of the panel, it reads, "This is so true, I say it to myself, 'A women got to love herself, if you don't, who will'", signed by Mary L. Proctor 2020.
