Will Kautz began his artistic training while he was still a young boy. His father, William Charles Kautz was a fine artist in New York and creativity was an important part of his home environment. This set is inspired by a collection of antique "silhouette" carvings that originated in Maine. They have been the most popular of Will's carvings because of the graceful form and coloration. The four shadows are not attached and may be arranged in a variety of ways.

William Kautz is known for his intricately carved and hand-painted wooden sculptures, often depicting whimsical animals and everyday scenes. His work blends traditional craftsmanship with vibrant, expressive detail, reflecting a deep connection to folk art traditions.

Care:

  • Use a soft, dry cloth or a soft-bristled brush to gently remove dust.
  • For detailed or intricate areas, a small paintbrush works well.
  • Avoid water, harsh chemicals, or abrasive cleaners—they can damage the paint or wood.
  • If needed, lightly wipe with a barely damp cloth, then dry immediately.
  • Keep out of direct sunlight to prevent fading of painted surfaces.
  • Avoid placing near heat sources to prevent drying, cracking, or warping of the wood.
  • Display in a dry environment; excessive humidity can cause wood to swell or paint to peel.
  • Handle by sturdy parts, avoiding thin or delicate areas like limbs, tails, or protrusions.
  • Avoid dropping or bumping the sculptures.
