Florida, United States Mary was born in Florida in 1960 and was raised by her maternal grandparents who instilled in her the value of religion. After losing members of her family in a fire in the mid-1990s, Mary said that the Lord appeared to her in a vision and commanded her to "paint the door." She began painting shortly after that. Mary considers herself a missionary, and her purpose is to communicate her message via her work. Typically, her paintings depict experiences from her life or members of her family, and they feature a message or a lesson that she has learned and wishes to impart. Mary incorporates artifacts found in her junkyard (now known as her Folk Art Museum) into her paintings.
