Mary was born in Florida in 1960 and nurtured by her maternal grandparents, who
instilled in her the value of religion. After losing members of her family in a fire in the
mid-1990s, Mary said that the Lord appeared to her in a vision and commanded her to
"paint the door." She began painting shortly after that.Mary considers herself a missionary,
and her purpose is to communicate her message via her work. Typically, her paintings depict
experiences from her life or members of her family, and they feature a message or a lesson
that she has learned and wishes to impart. Mary incorporates artifacts found in her junkyard
(now known as her Folk Art Museum) into her paintings.
